75 years of British comics from Royal Mail

A preview of a new set of comics-themed stamps from the Royal Mail was presented a while ago on the GB Stamps site. This set, slated for march 2012, consists of ten stamps, each featuring an important comics magazine from the past 75 years and on of the key characters from that magazine. They include the Dandy (with Desperate Dan), the Beano (with Dennis the Menace), the Eagle (with Dan Dare), Topper (with Beryl The Peril), Tiger (with Roy of the Rovers), the Bunty (with the Four Marys), Buster (with Buster as drawn by Hugh McNeill), Valiant (with The Steel Claw), Twinkle and, finally, 2000AD (with Judge Dredd).

As yet there's no mention of the stamps on the Royal Mail website, but you can order both the limited edition Girls' and Boys' FDC's from the British First Day Covers website.

Roald Dahl stamps from Royal Mail

The British Royal Mail last week issued a new series of stamps, celebrating the main characters from the books by Roald Dahl, as visualised by cartoonist and illustrator Quentin Blake. Six stamps feature characters from Matilda, The Fantastic Mr Fox, The Twits, James And The Giant peach, The Witches and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.

Since the series coincides with the thirtieth anniversary of the publication of Dahl's The BFG, this book is the subject of a separate minisheet of four stamps.

The stamps were designed by Magpie Studio, who last year also created the Winnie The Pooh issue, featuring art by E.H. Sheppard.

The stamps are published in a myriad of packages and formats, such as FDCs, stamp cards, presentation packages and framed sets. More on the Royal Mail website.

Belgian comics stamps for 2012

Belgium is traditionally a bountiful source for stamps with a comics or cartoons theme, but 2012 promises to be an exceptionally good year. No less than six different issues will probably of interest to the collector.

The main event is slated for september, when a full sheet of nine stamps will be issued, featuring nine important characters from Belgian comics : Jommeke, Cori, Gaston Lagaffe, Nero, Suske en Wiske, Jerry Spring, Blake & Mortimer, the Smurfs, Lucky Luke and, of course, Tintin.

The other issues include:

The annual youth philately issue, featuring imagery by cartoonist Karl Meersman (January)
A Visit Belgium tourist issue, with a design by Ever Meulen (February)
A 3D stamp commemorating the Titanic disaster, as designed by François Schuiten (April)
A stamp celebrating 50 years of independence in Rwanda and Burundi, designed by Gert Dooreman (May)
A stamp commemorating the Zenobé Gramme sailing vessel, with artwork by William Vance (September)

All stamps will be available from the BPost website but, as ever, only in due course...

Disney on Stamps

I am in the process of starting a Disney on Stamps Study Unit with the American Topical Association. Anyone can join. Membership is free. The society will be online only. At present my Disnemation website has had a few changes made to make it the headquarters of the Disneyana on Stamps Society and once the society is functioning (hopefully by January 2012) a quarterly newsletter will be available for members only. It's been announced for quite a long time, but the new Tintin stamp is finally here. It features images from all films that have featured the quiffed one, and is available from the Belgian Post Philately Website. Earlier this year, a second comics-themed sheet was issued with artwork by a host of Belgian gag cartoonists.

100 Years of Finnish comics

Finland has a long tradition of comics-themed post stamps, with their annual Moomin issue. This year, an additional set of stamps was issued, celebrating 100 years of Finnish comics. For each of the decade from the 1910's until the 1960's, a character that first appeared in that time is presented on one of the stamps. The series was designed by cartoonist Ville Tietäväinen, and is available as a sheet of self-adhesive stamps, an FDC and a cancelled postcard. USPS 'Go Green' stamps surprise

The US Postal Service's 'Go Green' sheet of stamps are drawn by an animator, Eli Noyes. Animated versions of the stamps are online as are his preliminary sketches. This appears to be a main page of information, and here's the press release.

The USA Philatelic cataloge (16: 2, 2011) explains the stamps design:

"The idea was to keep it light," says art director Derry Noyes, "not to scold as if shaking a finger and saying, 'Go do all these things and make the planet better."

She knew of one artist who might be perfect for the job: a filmaker and animator who founded a nonprofit group, Climate Cartoons, to create kid-friendly environmental messages. So in the spirit of "reuse and recyle," Derry recyled one of her oldest relationships - recruiting her older brother, Eli, for the project.

2011 Israel stamp features cartoon character

The tail of the stamp has "Chamudi" (the HMO's current mascot) on it. "Chamudi" is a comic-strip character created by Daniela London-Dekel and published for a long time by Ha'aretz weekly supplement. It moved to "Yedioth Achronot" newspaper about three years ago. It is also the HMO service's mascot for roughly five years now.

Send a Hello

Since 1986, Pixar films have stretched the boundaries of our imagination with stories about unlikely heroes who explore the bonds of friendship and family. Now some of those heroes are the subjects of colorful new Send a Hello stamps that encourage people to connect with loved ones through the mail.

The Send a Hello stamps, which go on sale Aug. 19, are a natural outgrowth of the Art of Disney stamp series issued between 2004 and 2008. Originally intended as a series of three annual issuances depicting friendship, celebration, and romance, the Art of Disney stamps proved so popular that the Postal Service expanded the series to include issuances in 2007 and 2008 to celebrate imagination and magic.

Based on that success, the Postal Service was eager to work with the Walt Disney Company again, choosing to explore the Disney*Pixar films, which offer exciting, contemporary characters and strong themes involving family and friends.

This pane of 20 stamps includes five different designs featuring Pixar characters: Lightning McQueen and Mater from Cars (2006); Remy the rat and Linguini from Ratatouille (2007); Buzz Lightyear and two of the green, three-eyed aliens from Toy Story (1995); Carl Fredricksen and Dug from Up (2009); and the robot WALL*E from WALL*E (2008).

Since the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature was introduced in 2001, all seven Pixar films released since that time have been nominated and five of the seven have won, including Ratatouille, WALL*E and Up.

New Israeli animation stamp

A correspondent in Israel sent in this note: The Israeli postal service had a new issuing today (11/20/2010). It included a stamp dedicating Israeli Animation. They issued a sheet of stamps and a commemorative booklet. The stamp was designed by a nice Israeli artist who does all sorts of illustrations and animation named MYSH. You can find tons of stuff on his comics work in English. It's called Duck & Cover.

As you can tell from the picture, this is a very clever stamp - it's a short series of animation if you buy the whole sheet!

Alan Gardener's Daily Cartoonist site is reporting that the comic strip stamps will be released on Thursday at Ohio State University's cartoon library. He says, "On hand for the occasion will be museum curator and professor Lucy Shelton Caswell, OSU President E. Gordon Gee, Beetle Bailey creator Mort Walker, Garfield creator Jim Davis, Dennis the Menace artists Marcus Hamilton and Ron Ferdinand, Archie Comics newspaper strip writer Craig Boldman and Calvin and Hobbes Editor Lee Salem. The event is free to the public and begins at 10:30 a.m. this Wednesday at The Ohio State University Performance Hall at the Ohio Union, 1739 High Street Columbus, OH."

This year, the comics festival of Haarlem, which is planned for the coming weekend, is largely devoted to comics in Russia. In order to reflect this in the festival's look and feel, its designers have opted for a faux soviet look, full of heroic statues and cyrillic lettering. And they created a series of fake stamps for the main navigation elements in the site. The stamps, which are designed to bring to mind the colorful propaganda that USSR stamps were, also evoke their examples by each featuring one of Haarlem's many architectural wonders. We can only hope sets an example for other festivals...

Le Bulle d'Encre presents its april stamp

Every month, the French Association du Bulle D'encre publishes a limited edition vanity stamp (using the French Post Office Mon Timbre A Moi service) featuring art by French cartoonists and comic creators. This month's stamp was created by Jason Dilukeba, creator of the new manga series, Ekeko.and features the illustration used for issue 1 of the book.

The stamp is published in a limited edition of 30 copies, and costs € 2,00. Previous stamps, are still available in very small numbers from the BDE website. Members get a € 0,50 on each stamp (all links in French).

The great World War II cartoonist Bill Mauldin has stamps issued for him today. This is actually the 2nd Mauldin stamp as his characters Willie and Joe were on one of the WW2 anniversary map sheets. Here's what the US Postal Service is selling - if anyone knows of a special cancellation, please let me know.

Belgium Youth Philately 2010 : Largo Winch

Last month the Belgian post office issued the latest edition of its annual Youth Philately stamp, featuring popular comic heroes. The tradition started in 1979 with a stamp celebrating 50 years of Tintin, and from 1984 onwards Belgian's most famous comic heroes have graced a special stamp.

This year Jean Van Hamme and Philippe Francq's millionaire adventurer Largo Winch was selected for the stamp, which is published as a single issue and in a sheet of ten stamps with an additional illustration by Franq.

Donald Duck 3000

The Dutch weekly Donald Duck celebrates its 3000th issue next month, and this is celebrated with a quite unique set of stamps. On april 6th, a first set will be offered to the public, consisting of a sheet of 10 stamps and a special cover page containing the first page of a special Donald Duck story. For a year and a half, two similar sets will be made released every month, resulting in a complete unique story.

Additionally, a separate set of three postcards with assorted stamps is available on the TNT Post website.

In Author goes in search of 'Calvin and Hobbes': Author details mission of writing about reclusive cartoonist Bill Watterson by Maria Sciullo, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette January 20, 2010, she writes:

Characteristically, Calvin and Hobbes are making grotesque faces on the stamp. It's part of an ongoing series honoring 100 years of comic strips in America, said Terry McCaffrey, manager of stamp development for the U.S. Postal Service.

" 'Calvin and Hobbes' came to the forefront" of the citizen's stamp advisory committee, he said. "It was an extremely popular choice."

Contacting Mr. Watterson through his agent, he said, they were surprised when he turned them down.

"His concern was he didn't want any product created around it. We said, 'We can certainly take that off the table, we just want to commemorate your great work on a postage stamp.'

"And he agreed to that."

And note the 'ongoing' in the quote - yeah!

Tim Kreider discovers a new cartoonist on a stamp

Tim Kreider, writing about a disturbing cartoon, discovered a cartoonist on a stamp that was new to me, and probably most people. The cartoonist, Charles Johnson appeared on stamps issued in 1997 by Uganda and Ghana - here's an article and then another on the series. He was on the stamps for his role as a writer and essayist, not his early cartoonist career.

Bill Mauldin and Sunday Funnies US stamps coming in 2010

The USPS announced its 2010 stamp issues today and it's got good news for collectors. Included are Bill Mauldin and Sunday Funnies.

Bill Mauldin.

With this stamp, the U.S. Postal Service honors Bill Mauldin, one of America’s favorite cartoonists. During World War II, military readers got a knowing laugh from Mauldin’s characters Willie and Joe, who gave their civilian audience an idea of what life was like for soldiers. After the war, Mauldin became a popular and influential editorial cartoonist. The stamp goes on sale in March.

In 1945, he won a Pulitzer Prize “for distinguished service as a cartoonist” and the Allied high command awarded him its Legion of Merit. His illustrated memoir, Up Front, was a bestseller. That same year, his “dogface” Willie appeared on the cover of Time.

U.S. Postal Service art director Terry McCaffrey chose to honor Mauldin through a combination of photography and an example of Mauldin’s art. The photo of Bill Mauldin is by John Phillips, a photographer for Life magazine; it was taken in Italy on December 31, 1943. Mauldin’s cartoon, showing his characters Willie and Joe, is used courtesy of the 45th Infantry Division Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Sunday Funnies

The Sunday Funnies stamp pane honors Archie, Beetle Bailey, Dennis the Menace, Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes. The stamps will go on sale in July.

Offering an idealized portrait of American adolescence, Archie existed only in comic-book form before debuting in newspapers in 1946. A typical small-town teenager with a knack for goofing things up, 17-year-old Archie Andrews is often torn between haughty brunette Veronica Lodge and sweet, blonde Betty Cooper.

A military strip with universal appeal, Beetle Bailey first appeared in September 1950. Possibly the laziest man in the army, Private Beetle Bailey is an expert at sleeping and avoiding work. His chronic indolence antagonizes Sergeant Orville P. Snorkel, who is tough on his men but calls them “my boys.”

Dennis the Menace follows the antics of Dennis Mitchell, a good-hearted but mischievous little boy who is perpetually “5-ana-half” years old. His curiosity tests the patience of his loving parents and neighbors, guaranteeing that their lives are anything but dull. The comic debuted in March 1951 as a single-panel gag.

Garfield first waddled onto the comics page in June 1978. Self-centered and cynical, the crabby tabby hates Mondays and loves lasagna. He lives with Jon Arbuckle, a bumbling bachelor with a fatally flawed fashion sense, and Odie, a dopey but devoted dog.

Calvin and Hobbes explores the fantasy life of 6-year-old Calvin and his tiger pal, Hobbes. The inseparable friends ponder the mysteries of the world and test the fortitude of Calvin’s parents, who never know where their son’s imagination will take him. The strip ran from November 1985 to December 1995.

Mauldin's work was also featured in one of the World War II 50th anniversary panes. Mort Walker, creator of Beetle Bailey was instrumental in getting the last set of comic strip stamps issued. Most of the Sunday Funnies seem to be aimed at commercialism and collectors though. Archie has been in the news this year for his 'marriage' to Veronica (and Betty. Read the comic books) and a collection of the strip is due next year. Garfield continues to be one of the most popular strips of course, and has appeared on non-American stamps.

New Astérix Stamps

Today the French Post Office announced a new sheet celebrating the 50th anniversary of BD hero Astérix Le Gaule. It features seven stamps with the main characters from the series created by Albert Uderzo and René Goscinny. Each of the stamps mentions France as their country of origin, but also Gaule, the country's name in the series.

The main stamp, showing Astérix himself on top of a golden "50" is also available as a solo stamp.

Additionally, an illustrated booklet was published showcasing the comic, and containing a cancelled stamp.

Kermit Christmas cancellation

I've just gotten a couple of Christmas cancellations with Kermit the frog, from the Muppets, wearing a Santa cap. They've all been inkjet and probably read A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa (according to Bill Sylvester, whose done a lot of work on Disney stamps).
