The USPS announced its 2010 stamp issues today and it's got good news for collectors. Included are Bill Mauldin and Sunday Funnies.
Bill Mauldin.
With this stamp, the U.S. Postal Service honors Bill Mauldin, one of America’s favorite cartoonists. During World War II, military readers got a knowing laugh from Mauldin’s characters Willie and Joe, who gave their civilian audience an idea of what life was like for soldiers. After the war, Mauldin became a popular and influential editorial cartoonist. The stamp goes on sale in March.
In 1945, he won a Pulitzer Prize “for distinguished service as a cartoonist” and the Allied high command awarded him its Legion of Merit. His illustrated memoir, Up Front, was a bestseller. That same year, his “dogface” Willie appeared on the cover of Time.
U.S. Postal Service art director Terry McCaffrey chose to honor Mauldin through a combination of photography and an example of Mauldin’s art. The photo of Bill Mauldin is by John Phillips, a photographer for Life magazine; it was taken in Italy on December 31, 1943. Mauldin’s cartoon, showing his characters Willie and Joe, is used courtesy of the 45th Infantry Division Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Sunday Funnies
The Sunday Funnies stamp pane honors Archie, Beetle Bailey, Dennis the Menace, Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes. The stamps will go on sale in July.
Offering an idealized portrait of American adolescence, Archie existed only in comic-book form before debuting in newspapers in 1946. A typical small-town teenager with a knack for goofing things up, 17-year-old Archie Andrews is often torn between haughty brunette Veronica Lodge and sweet, blonde Betty Cooper.
A military strip with universal appeal, Beetle Bailey first appeared in September 1950. Possibly the laziest man in the army, Private Beetle Bailey is an expert at sleeping and avoiding work. His chronic indolence antagonizes Sergeant Orville P. Snorkel, who is tough on his men but calls them “my boys.”
Dennis the Menace follows the antics of Dennis Mitchell, a good-hearted but mischievous little boy who is perpetually “5-ana-half” years old. His curiosity tests the patience of his loving parents and neighbors, guaranteeing that their lives are anything but dull. The comic debuted in March 1951 as a single-panel gag.
Garfield first waddled onto the comics page in June 1978. Self-centered and cynical, the crabby tabby hates Mondays and loves lasagna. He lives with Jon Arbuckle, a bumbling bachelor with a fatally flawed fashion sense, and Odie, a dopey but devoted dog.
Calvin and Hobbes explores the fantasy life of 6-year-old Calvin and his tiger pal, Hobbes. The inseparable friends ponder the mysteries of the world and test the fortitude of Calvin’s parents, who never know where their son’s imagination will take him. The strip ran from November 1985 to December 1995.
Mauldin's work was also featured in one of the World War II 50th anniversary panes. Mort Walker, creator of Beetle Bailey was instrumental in getting the last set of comic strip stamps issued. Most of the Sunday Funnies seem to be aimed at commercialism and collectors though. Archie has been in the news this year for his 'marriage' to Veronica (and Betty. Read the comic books) and a collection of the strip is due next year. Garfield continues to be one of the most popular strips of course, and has appeared on non-American stamps.

Mark Doeffinger's peace stamp
From: Mark Doeffinger comes this take on holiday postage. Mark notes,
I thought you might like this Holiday stamp. It's a little late because, when I first drew it, I thought it wasn't cartoonish enough for cartoonphilately. So I put it on my own website: tthelitestuffcartoons.com But then I thought, well, it is Christmasy, and it is a fairly clever takeoff on the "Love Stamp." So if you can use it on your stamp blog....
Meanwhile, it's just a coincidence that I have 2 recent cartoon stamps. The peace stamp has been on my mind for over a year and i just got around to drawing it. Usually my stamp ideas are far and few between.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Mark

1943 Force 'stamps' from Sunday comics section
New Astérix Stamps
Today the French Post Office announced a new sheet celebrating the 50th anniversary of BD hero Astérix Le Gaule. It features seven stamps with the main characters from the series created by Albert Uderzo and René Goscinny. Each of the stamps mentions France as their country of origin, but also Gaule, the country's name in the series.
The main stamp, showing Astérix himself on top of a golden "50" is also available as a solo stamp.
Additionally, an illustrated booklet was published showcasing the comic, and containing a cancelled stamp.

Kermit Christmas cancellation
I've just gotten a couple of Christmas cancellations with Kermit the frog, from the Muppets, wearing a Santa cap. They've all been inkjet and probably read A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa (according to Bill Sylvester, whose done a lot of work on Disney stamps).
And here's confirmation from a Muppets fansite and PR from the Muppets Facebook page. And a Youtube ad.

Two issues have been announced : a sheet of six stamps, featuring several characters from the series (priced at 5,20 € of which 1,84 € is donated to the French Red Cross) and a solo stamp (0,56 €). Oliphant Maximum card from 1988
Based on this text, I'm unclear as to whether Oliphant drew the stamp as well. Does anyone know? And I don't know if the USPS does these anymore - I've been buying stamped postcards for the recent comics stamps.
"This maximum card was issued in connection with the U.S./ Australia commemorative stamp which was jointly issued in Washington, D.C. and Sydney, Australia, on January 26, 1988. The stamps was designed by Roland Harvey of Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia. The art shown on the reverse of this card was designed by the renowned syndicated cartoonist, Pat Oliphant.

Le petit Nicolas
The French Post Office announced a new set of stamps yesterday featuring illustrations from the well-loved Petit Nicolas books by author and comic writer René Goscinny and cartoonist Jean-Jacques Sempé.
The stamps were launched to coincide with the premiere of the Petit Nicolas film, later this week.
Le Petit Nicolas was first published in 1959. In that same year Goscinny, who had already gained notoriety thanks to the Lucky Luke stories he wrote for Morris, would become editor of Pilote Magazine, and would create the famous Astérix Le Gaule series with Albert Uderzo. Jean-Jacques Sempé, who had already started publishing in Paris-Match, would later become quite famous in the US as well for his cartoons and covers for the New Yorker magazine.

Stahler editorial cartoon on stamps
Jeff Stahler's editorial cartoon on the new classic tv stamps is amusing. The stamps do have a slight comic book link in that one is for the Lone Ranger. Of course, plenty of comic books were done for other tv shows too such as Lassie and Howdy Doody which are on the stamps.
Robert Risko 'stamp' art
I was paging through an old New Yorker (October 15, 2007) and found an illustration for a review of a play "Mauritius" in which caricaturist Robert Risko drew Katie Finneran holding a sheet of Mauritius stamps. The review was Pay and Play by John Lahr, p. 102.

Winners will be notified the week of May 18 - 22, 2009.
The Simpsons, currently in its 20th year as a regularly scheduled half-hour series, is the longest-running comedy in television history. The show is a cultural phenomenon, recognizable throughout the world.
“We are excited to celebrate The Simpsons on postage stamps,” said U.S. Postal Service Executive Director of Stamp Services David Failor. “Eyebrow-raising to say the least, this witty, well-written pop icon continues to irreverently satire its parody of a middle-class family as it lampoons American culture. The Simpsons stamps, which includes known philatelists Bart Simpson, will serve as a great opportunity to interest youngsters into stamp collecting.”
“This is the biggest and most adhesive honor The Simpsons has ever received,” said Matt Groening, creator and executive producer of The Simpsons.
“We are emotionally moved by the Postal Service selecting us rather than making the lazy choice of someone who has benefited society,” said James L. Brooks, executive producer of The Simpsons.
Simpsons Beat the Odds The U.S. Postal Service receives approximately 50,000 suggestions for stamp subjects each year, yet only about 20 topics are selected for postage. The Simpsons is the only television show to be featured as the sole subject of a stamp set while still in primetime production.
First-Day-of-Issue Dedication Ceremony The Simpsons creator and executive producer, Matt Groening, who created the original artwork for the stamps, is scheduled to participate in the dedication ceremony, along with executive producer James L. Brooks and several of the actors, at Fox Studios in Los Angeles at 11:15 a.m. PT on Thursday, May 7.
A limited number of seats are available to the public on a first-call, first-reserved basis. Those interested in attending can call 1-866-268-3243 beginning Friday, April 10 between noon and 5 p.m. ET, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday thereafter. Due to the expected demand, only one reservation will be accepted per requester per call. When calling, speak slowly and spell your name. Be sure to leave a phone number to receive a callback confirmation. There is a fee for parking. Calls made prior to noon ET on April 10 will not be accepted. Individuals attending the event are asked to provide a driver’s license or another form of government photo identification.
Stamp Selection Process How does the Postal Service sort through 50,000 stamp subject suggestions annually to reach a final cut of approximately 20 topics selected for circulation? To help in this selection process, the Postmaster General established the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee 50 years ago. Members are appointed to the Committee by the Postmaster General. They reflect a wide range of educational, artistic, historical and professional expertise. For additional information, visit this link: http://www.usps.com/communications/organization/csac.htm

Belgian comics stamps 2009
Leave it to the Belgian Post Office to keep you in the dark on what they're going to be publishing this year until you stumble across a very unprofessional pdf document buried deep in their website.
But anyway - not a lot of comics-related material, or so it would seem. June sees the yearly Youth Philately issue, with Roger Leloup's Yoko Tsuno (one sheet of 10 stamps, announced for June 26th). Then on October 5th a special commemorative sheet is planned on the 20th anniversary of the Brussels Centre de la Bande Dessinée.
Possibly of interest is a series on great composers, with portraits by cartoonist and illustrator, Jan de Maesschalck (later this month).

Cartoonist Mark Doeffinger writes in with cartoon stamp example
Cartoonist Mark Doeffinger writes in:
I just ran across your cartoon philately blog today. You said you were interested in cartoon illustrations such as that of the anthrax stamp (very funny). Well, back in 1985 I had a cartoon stamp in my little self-published book COUPON CLIPPERS. I thought you might like it. Of course back then a regular postage stamp was only $.22. Anyway, shouldn't the American lawn, especially the postage stamp lawn, be commemorated? The lawn may no longer be with us as it is under attack for wasting resources and causing pollution via fertilizer and pesticides. Anyway, I thought you might enjoy the stamp. I am still cartooning via my website: thelitestuffcartoons.com

Illustration of a cartoon stamp
Here's an illustration of a cartoon stamp on anthrax by Geoffrey Grahn from the New York Times October 13, 2008. It illustrated an editorial by Lawrence M. Wein - "Neither Snow, Nor Rain, Nor Anthrax..."
These type of illustrations interest me. I know of a few others ... Dark Horse Comics uses one on their monthly email, Christopher Bing has done one and Richard Thompson has some on one of the books he illustrated. A cool collection would be to buy up all the originals, hey?

1951 fundraising stamps by Rowland Emett
Chris Brown wrote to me about Rowland Emett, a British cartoonist, for another project, but when I checked out his website, I found 4 fundraising stamps related to a 1951 Festival of Britain, and the one I've stuck up here on the right actually shows one of the cartoonist's train creations! Three are on this page.
Check out Emett's other drawings too especially the Christmas cards. They're lovely.
